About Troop 15 - Scout Master's Message

Scouting Year 2006-07

Dear Parents, Scouts and Interested Scouters,

Scouting is a values-based program with its own code of conduct. The Scout Oath and Law help instill the values of good conduct and honesty. A boy who spends one year in a Scout troop will learn lifetime skills. He will learn basic outdoor skills, first aid, citizenship training, leadership skills, self-reliance, and how to get along with others.

Empowering boys to be leaders is the core of Scouting. Scouts learn by doing, and what they do in Troop 15 is lead their patrols and their troop. The boys themselves develop the troop’s program; they then take responsibility for figuring out how they will achieve their goals.

One of the most important challenges for me as Scoutmaster is to train boy leaders to run the troop by providing direction, coaching, and support. The boys will make mistakes now and then. Only through real hands-on experience as leaders can boys learn to lead.

As the Scoutmaster, I will ensure your boys complete the requirements to advance through the ranks up to First Class. After your son attains this rank, he will be responsible to keep track of his progress towards Star, Life and Eagle. As parents’ it will be your responsibility to review his progress and keep him on track towards completion of the advanced ranks.

In order for the boys to be successful in the Scouting program, parents must be fully involved.

Troop 15 has a very advanced outdoor program that includes High Sierra Hikes, Summer Camp, snow camping, sea kayaking, and monthly campouts where the boys get to practice their outdoor and leadership skills.

Troop 15 meets most Tuesday nights from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm at Wildwood School from September through May.

Yours in Scouting,

Bruce Turner
